GUEST PERFORMANCE OF KING LEAR AT YDT

A guest performance of William Shakespeare’s King Lear, produced by the Croatian National Theatre from Zagreb and directed by Janusz Kica, is scheduled for 17th October on our Ljuba Tadić stage.  Thus continues the cooperation between CNT and YDT which resumed in 2015, after a hiatus of almost three decades.

Shakespeare’s King Lear represents a challenge for everyone in the theatre business and the problems and questions it raises are eternal.  What happens when a man goes mad because all his hopes have been betrayed? When he decides to give up, not because he is powerless but because he is disillusioned?  When he dies of a broken heart once he realises that the mistakes he made meant that other people had to die?  Kica’s version of Lear is constantly in search of that which lies within, for the disintegration and madness of a man in the centre of this production, one who is more man than king.  The struggle for power that he relinquishes of his own free will is nothing but a backdrop for his own personal tragedy, old age, madness and downfall.  It is a Lear looking deep inside himself.

King Lear is potrayed by Miki Manojlović with an ensemble cast including: Ana Begić, Iva Mihalić, Jadranka Đokić, Milan Pleština, Mislav Čavajda, Bojan Navojec, Goran Grgić, Krešimir Mikić, Ivan Glowatzky, Silvio Vovk, Luka Dragić, Alen Šalinović, Damir Markovina, Ivan Jončić, Ivan Colarić and Ugo Korani.

The Polish director Janusz Kica holds a degree in theatre studies from the University of Krakow. After completing his degree in 1981, he emigrated to West Germany. In Cologne he became a student of theatre studies and history of art. The first play he directed in Zagreb was in 1990 at Zagreb Youth Theatre and it became one of many plays he has directed over the years for theatres in Croatia’s capital city. Besides Germany and Croatia, he has also directed productions in Austria (Vienna) and in Slovenia (Celje, Maribor, Nova Gorica, Piran) but mainly at the Slovene National Theatre in Ljubljana. At Zagreb Youth Theatre Kica also directed Locusts by Biljana Srbljanović. He has received numerous awards for his work.

The set for King Lear was designed by Studio NUMEN and Ivana Jonke who have also done stage design for YDT productions of Metamorphoses, Hamlet and Einstein’s Dreams.

Tickets for the performance of King Lear are available from our Box Office.
