The Glass Neck by Biljana Srbljanović is about a family living in Belgrade where, as it often happens, there are three generations living under the same roof. It is a family where tensions run high and every member carries the painful heritage of their youth. Complex and almost Chekovian relations between the family members are interwoven with the playwrights’ own observations on the changes in the society from one generation to the next. The text was commissioned by Yugoslav Drama Theatre and though it is in many ways painfully honest, it is nevertheless brimming with humour.   Throughout the play there are constant shifts from one opposing emotion to another – from uproarious laughter to painful truths.
